Vaping CBD – Everything you need to know

Vaping CBD oil is currently the fastest way to get most of the health benefits CBD oil offers. If you consider the fact that it is free of carcinogens and tar, then you’d understand why it is a safer alternative to smoking.

There is a daily increase in the number of vape pen enthusiasts, but is vaping really healthy? What medical conditions will be best treated with vape pens? How about long term effects? How does the Oil get into the system? How do you calculate CBD oil dosages for vape pen?

These questions and more are the main reasons we put together a guide which covers everything you will need to know about vaping CBD oil. Let’s start from the basics:

What is CBD oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the numerous naturally-occurring cannabinoids extracted from the hemp plant. In its pure form it is a light yellow wax-like compound that is well known for its therapeutic effects. Since it is almost impossible to get the concentration or calculate a dose from the pure solid form, the CBD is dissolved in MCT oil (gotten from coconuts) to produce what we will now call “CBD oil” or “CBD tincture”.

How does the body use it?

The human body has many endpoints for receiving and interacting with CBD oil known collectively as the Endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for bodily functions like movement and coordination, sleep, memory, processing of pain and emotions etc.

When CBD oil gets into the bloodstream (be it from vaping, ingesting, edibles or topical creams) it targets and interacts with this endocannabinoid system in a way that provides therapeutic effects on the body.

Getting the dosage right

Fortunately, when it comes to calculating CBD oil dosage there is not a “one-size-fits-all” dosage nor is there a recommended daily intake. Your dosage will depend on a couple of factors like body weight, metabolism, tolerance and medical condition or symptoms being treated. This is fun because it gives us room to experiment and find a dosage specific to our needs.

Though the calculation can be a little tricky, we’ll show you two simple ways to get close to the optimal dosage.

Weight method

If you want to get started with the weight method, you’d simply take 1mg of CBD per 10 kg of body weight. How? Let’s assume you weigh 75kg, you will get a starting dose like this:

Total body weight / 10kg = starting dose.

            So, 75 / 10 = 7.5mg.

Pretty simple and straightforward, but how do you calculate 15mg for say, this 30 ml bottle containing 500 mg of CBD. That’s where the next method comes in.

Dropper method

We can’t say for other brands, but all our CBD oil come with a 1 ml dropper. To calculate the amount of CBD present in each full dropper of a 30 ml 100 mg bottle we simply divide:

Total CBD (mg) / Volume of oil (ml) = CBD per dropper.

So, 100 mg / 30 ml = 3.3 mg in each full dropper.

This is a good starting dose for people looking to treat sleep problem, anxiety or chronic pain. For other serious illness, you might need to bump up the dosage often till you start experiencing relieve.

Is there risk of overdose?

Actually, you cannot overdose on CBD oil. CBD is well tolerated by lots of people and so far research has shown that CBD is low in toxicity. Doesn’t mean you should dose blindly, it’s far better to follow a treatment plan and stick to (or gradually increase) a dose depending on how it makes you feel.

How to use a vape pen safely?

Yes, vape pens are safer than cigarettes and other tar depositing substances, but on the flip side you need to take some precautions when consuming CBD liquids with a vape pen.

  • Quality oil matters: Vaping CBD liquids delivers over 40% of the compound into your blood system compared to 9% oral ingestion offers. What this means for your health is that you should source your CBD liquids from a brand that takes quality and your safety seriously. So you don’t end up inhaling high amounts of impurities or CBD liquid that is way lower than the advertised concentration.
  • Avoid Cheap vape pens: A good vape pen will be hot enough to turn most of the CBD liquids into tiny molecules that can easily be absorbed by your lungs without burning the compound. Good vape pen plus quality oil equals to greater absorption of CBD.
  • Refill properly: Refill levels will depend on your dosage. If you need a 30mg daily dose and you have a vape pen upwards of 20 ml. You will need to calculate your dose from the dropper like we showed above.

How to use a vape pen for treatment?

Using a vape pen to treat ailments like anxiety, panic attacks, sleep problems and chronic pain is really straight forward. Simply recharge and refill, inhale and hold.

For those with chronic pain or anxiety related problems, it is recommended to inhale three to four lungs full of the CBD e-liquid, but spread it out over an hour or two so you get the therapeutic effects for most of the day. For sleep problems, however, this will need to be taken some hours prior to bedtime.

Are there long term side-effects of vaping?

So far there is no research that shows any long term side-effects resulting from CBD e-liquid use, the main concern is with brands that produce low quality e-liquids and the harmful chemicals some products contain. In essence, quality is key.

If you have existing medical conditions affecting your lungs or breathing you should have a discussion with your doctor first.

What are the side-effects of CBD?

Does CBD have side-effects? Yes, but minimal. Save for dryness of mouth, the other side-effects of CBD are experienced at really high dosages. If you experience these side-effects we recommend you cut down your dosage until they clear up:

  • Drowsiness.
  • Dizziness.
  • Dryness of mouth.
  • Drop in blood pressure.

Remember moderation is key.

Does vaping CBD get you high?

Far from it, CBD is not psychotic at all. The compound that gets you high is THC. If you want to avoid THC’s mind-altering effects, then you’d do best to source for a product that is purely CBD (CBD isolate) or one that contains less than 0.5% of THC. With those containing little to no THC you can go about your day without feeling any drop in coordination.

Can Vaping cause you to fail a drug test?

A legitimate concern for people working in the public sector or any other industry where regular drug tests are mandatory. The truth is, CBD alone cannot make you fail a drug test.

The body produces its own cannabinoids, all CBD does is tell the ECS to make and use more of its own cannabinoids. If a CBD oil user fails a drug test, it can easily be traced to THC.

If you regularly undergo drug test, but want the health benefits of CBD oil, then you should only purchase a product that has 0.5% THC or no THC at all.

Can I pair Vaping with sublingual application?

If you need quick relief that last for a long duration, then pair vaping with sublingual delivery. Limited vaping paired with oral delivery is a good strategy for patients who use CBD for pain management, but wish to reduce the potential burden of vaping on the respiratory system.

Are there other alternatives to vaping?

If you do not fancy smoke, there are numerous ways to enjoy the health benefits of CBD. CBD is available in oil or tinctures, gummies, edibles, topical creams and more. Each has a different effect, duration it can be felt and factor influencing how the CBD is delivered to the endocannabinoid system. Depending on the medical condition you’re treating, you might find one to be more convenient than the other.

Can CBD help quit smoking?

Yes, research has shown that CBD reduces the urge to take nicotine in habitual smokers. The nicotine abstinence lasted close to two weeks before the urge for nicotine went up again. For those looking to quit tar-depositing smoke habits, then CBD offers a way to break out of the harmful cycle.

Will I have withdrawal Symptoms?

CBD has no withdrawal symptoms. That’s why it is very effective for treating opiate withdrawal symptoms like pain, anxiety, insomnia and other withdrawal-induced mood swings. (see positives and negatives of CBD)
