CBD Oil Dosage Overview
Dosage for CBD oil depends on the individual and on the effects they are aiming for. The greater the pain you are in or more disruptive the ailment you seek to treat, the stronger your dose will need to be. Body size is also relevant in this equation. However, it is only through careful experimentation, via the up titration method, that you will come to that ideal dosage.
CBD oil is best used in 6-12 hour rotations (two to three times a day). As the body absorbs it via the digestive system, it can take longer than the eliquid to have an effect (possibly two hours). However, it will continue having this effect for longer than the eliquid.
CBD Oil Dosage for Beginners
When using CBD oil, we recommend beginners start with a 100mg version. A drop in the morning before breakfast would be best and then another 12 hours later (or six then 12 hours later).
Each dropper from our 30ml bottle is equal to 1ml. Squeeze the rubber tip and release and 1ml will draw up into the glass dropper. 1ml is the maximum that the dropper will draw in.
In the 30ml bottle which contains 100mg of CBD, a 1ml dropper full will have approximately 3.3mg of CBD in it.
So taking two droppers (2mls) of 100mg CBD liquid, you would ingest approximately 7mg of CBD each day.
We highly recommend that you keep as consistent a routine as possible during this experimentation stage. Keep at this level for at least five days. Eat as consistently as you can and try to not consume alcohol to get the clearest picture of how well this dosage of CBD works for you.
During these five days the CBD will have an effect on you. The effect may be slight, but we have not yet met anyone who hasn’t felt some improvement on even the lowest dosage. The question you need to answer for yourself then is whether those effects are enough for you.
If not, we recommend the same routine, but doubling your dose. So in our example, you’d use two drops in the morning and the same that night. Your dose would therefore increase from approximately 7mg a day to 14mg. Again, keep your eating as consistent as possible to better track the change in effects.
CBD Oil Dosage for Specific Ailments
CBD has lots of healing properties which -with the right dosage- can improve your health. Here’s how to get the right dosage.
CBD oil dosages and duration of treatment depend mainly on the illness. Mayo Clinic recommends the guidelines below to treat different illness:
- Loss of Appetite: 2.5mg of THC (orally), with or without 1 mg of CBD for 6 weeks.
- Chronic Pain: 2.5-20mg of CBD [with or without THC] (orally).
- Epilepsy: 200-300mg of CBD (orally) daily.
- Movement Problems Because of Huntington’s Disease: 10mg of CBD per kg of body weight daily for six weeks (orally).
- Sleep Disorders: 40mg-160mg of CBD (orally).
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) symptoms: Cannabis plant extracts containing 2.5-120 milligrams of a THC/CBD combination daily for 2-15 weeks. Patients typically use eight sprays within any three hours, with a maximum of 48 sprays in any 24-hour period.
- Schizophrenia: 40-1,280mg oral CBD daily.
- Glaucoma: A single sublingual CBD dosage of 20-40mg (>40 mg may increase eye pressure).
Before calculating your CBD oil dosage, you need to take into account some important factors like:
- Concentration of the tincture
- Your body weight
- Severity of the condition you are treating
Estimating the amount of CBD oil based on body weight
Even with conventional medical treatment, the different medications take individual body weight into account. Individuals that weigh higher will need more CBD to achieve the same effect as those that weigh less.
One simple and easy way to determine your dosage is to take 1-5MG of CBD oil for every 10lbs of body weight depending on the severity of the condition or the desired effect. For instance, a person weighing 70kg should take 20MG-30MG whereas 25MG-35MG is a better estimate for a 90kg person.
Knowing how much to take is step one, next is measuring out that quantity.
How to measure your CBD oil dosage?
Knowing your dosage is pointless if you do not understand how to measure it from the bottle.
The Dropper way
When your bottle of CBD oil arrives, it will most likely have a dropper inside it. The process is simple:
- Fill the dropper with the tincture then drop it under your tongue.
- Now, hold the liquid under your tongue for about 45 to 60 seconds before you swallow.
Holding it under your tongue lets your body absorb the CBD through the blood vessel packed there.
How many droppers equal your dosage?
A dropper normally holds 1 ml of liquid. If you know the concentration(MG) of CBD in the tincture and the volume(ML) of liquid in the bottle, with simple mathematics we can determine how much CBD is in the dropper:
[Concentration of CBD in the bottle] / [volume of liquid in the bottle] = MGs of CBD in a dropper.
For instance, if you get this 30ML bottle that contains 500MG of CBD, each dropper will provide you with
500 / 30 = 16.6MG
400 / 120 = 3.3MG for the 120ML bottle containing 400MG CBD.
So, suppose you are taking CBD for chronic pain and your dosage is 25MG. If you have a 500MG tincture and a dropper contains 16MG, that means you will have to take a full dropper and a half. This method gets you within range and is far better than no measurement.
Talk to your Doctor
Though most doctors didn‘t study the healing properties of cannabis in medical school, there is an increasing number of doctors that have hands-on experience with CBD, many of them will advise you on your CBD dosage, what to expect and more. Your physician will be in a better position to tell if your medical condition will benefit from the healing properties of cannabis or of underlying genetic conditions that may affect your experience.
Start small, increase slowly
Many people think you need to consume high doses of CBD to kick start the healing process. This is actually incorrect. The therapeutic effects of CBD are available at small dosage and high dosages. For beginners, we recommend going slow.
This means, after calculating the estimate for your body weight and metabolism; the best way to start, is a little below the recommended baseline and gradually increase the dosage from there.
For instance, if your estimated dosage is 25mg, it is advisable to start with 15-20mg and gradually increase upwards of 30-35 mg until you achieve the desired effect.
Also keep in mind that the ingested CBD oil will take 20-40 minutes before you start feeling the effects, subsequent dosage increments should be 30-45 minutes after the last one.
If you are taking CBD for its healing properties, it is good practice to record your experience in a journal or use your phone’s voice note to track you progress. Remember, each person will have a different tolerance for a CBD dose at various stages in life depending on vitality, stress, diet changes etc.
Give it time
Yes, CBD products such as CBD oil has healing properties, but It is not a miracle cure. To reap lasting benefits, take it for at least 3 months before deciding whether or not to continue. Some people give up easily once they empty the second or third bottle but the effects of CBD oil are not instant, the key is to find the right dosage and then stick to it.
